Moderate Earthquake Shakes Southern California

Magnitude 4.2 Tremor Felt in Los Angeles and Surrounding Areas

On Friday, January 1, 2024, at 16:27:32 UTC, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 struck in Southern California, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 114 kilometers deep beneath the earth's surface at coordinates 33.580°N 118.370°W, near downtown Los Angeles.

Residents across a wide area reported feeling the temblor, including in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and neighboring communities.

Initial reports from the USGS indicate that the quake was felt by over 5,600 people. There have been no immediate reports of any significant damage or injuries.

The earthquake comes less than a week after a magnitude 4.1 quake struck near Rancho Cucamonga, California, on December 26, 2023.
