CrowdStrike Outage Affects Windows Computers Globally
Faulty Software Update Causes Massive Disruption
CrowdStrike Responds to Problem
A faulty software update issued by security giant CrowdStrike has resulted in a massive overnight outage that's affected Windows computers globally. The CrowdStrike Falcon platform regularly collects and analyzes trillions of security events every day from across 176 countries.
In an initial statement, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found. "We are investigating the issue and will provide updates as they become available," Kurtz said.
The global computer outage affecting airports, banks, and other businesses on Friday appears to stem at least partly from a software update. CrowdStrike said these types of updates to the Falcon program happen multiple times a day and have done so since the program's launch.
The disruption caused by the faulty update is a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity. Businesses and individuals alike rely on software updates to protect their systems from threats. However, even reputable companies can make mistakes, and it's important to have a plan in place in case of an outage.
CrowdStrike has not yet released a timeline for when the outage will be resolved. The company is urging customers to contact support if they are experiencing problems.
