Germany Qualifies for Last-16 With 2-0 Win Over Hungary
Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan Score for the Hosts
Germany played their 1000th international match against Hungary and secured a place in the last 16 of EURO 2024 with a 2-0 win.
Jamal Musiala put the hosts in front in the 23rd minute after linking up with Leroy Sane. The Bayern Munich star received the ball on the left flank and drove towards the Hungary penalty area. Musiala then cut inside and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Germany doubled their lead in the 52nd minute through Ilkay Gundogan. The Manchester City midfielder scored from close range after being set up by Serge Gnabry. The Arsenal winger showed great skill to beat his marker and then crossed the ball to Gundogan, who tapped home from a few yards out.
Germany controlled the game for long periods and could have scored more goals. However, Hungary defended resolutely and goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi made some fine saves to keep the score down.
The win means that Germany has finished top of Group F with nine points from three games. They will now face the runner-up from Group E in the last 16.
